Hail and Escalating Roof Damage

Hail and Roof Damage

Roof damage can be a significant cost for businesses and one that can be avoided with vigilant and routine inspections. While many companies are likely aware of the potential for damage after a storm, they may not be as aware of the threat a hail storm poses to their roof. Hail comes in a variety of sizes and weights, and these ice balls can do lasting damage to your roof if not mitigated early.

1. Shingles

The most apparent signs of hail damage to your roof are broken or missing shingles. Hail stones can either create small divots in a shingle, or they can completely fracture and even break a shingle free of the roof altogether.

2. Underlayment

While missing shingles are not significant causes of roof damage, torn or missing underlayment can be. When a shingle is broken or missing, it can lead to the exposure or wearing away of the underlayment. Tattered or damaged underlayment can lead to water damaged sheathing.

3. Sheathing

Sheathing is the wood boards that cover your attic joist. These boards are your last line of defense against the outside. If your shingles and underlayment are damaged, then your sheathing is exposed to rain and other elements. Depending on the size of hail, it can severely damage your sheathing through both impact and melting.

4. Insulation and Attic

When the roof barrier is compromised, it leaves insulation and your attic space potential exposed. This exposure can lead to moisture buildup and possibly mold development. If you are experiencing this level of damage, you may want to call a disaster restoration specialist in the Mars Hill, GA, area.

Hail storms can cause significant roof damage. Routine inspections of your commercial property’s roofline should protect you from any obvious issues like missing shingles. However, you may want to seek assistance for more thorough inspections for underlayment and sheathing damage.

How to Get Back on Your Feet After a Commercial Fire

A fire can have a devastating effect on any business in Red Rock, GA. The loss of equipment and the cost to repair the damage can seem overwhelming in the aftermath, but with a little foresight and these easy steps, executing an effective fire restoration plan can be simple.

Plan Ahead

While you can't predict a disaster, you can plan for it. Take these four steps today to ensure your company’s future:

  • Make a business continuity plan.
  • Research and acquire sufficient fire insurance.
  • Keep up-to-date records of all business conducted.
  • Make sure the building occupied is up to code and safe.

Call Your Insurance Provider

After a fire, your first step towards recovery is enacting your fire insurance policy. Your provider will send an inspector to assess the damage before restoration begins. If you have accurate documentation of your assets and a sound insurance policy, you will then be able to file a claim to get the funds you need.

Determine the Extent of the Damage

If it is safe to go inside the building, make sure to wear protective gear, such as masks and gloves. Help your insurance agent and fire restoration service by taking a lot of pictures. You should include documents, computers, phones and building materials. Anything important to the survival of your business is worth documenting.

Contact a Fire Damage Restoration Service

After you've filed your claim, you can begin the rebuilding process. Restoration professionals will conduct an assessment of their own and establish an action plan. This can consist of several steps, including water removal if the fire burst any pipes, boarding windows that have shattered and soot and smoke cleaning.

Standing water in a living room. Concept of a flooded home or water damage Flooded living room in Mars Hills after a pipe burst.

Have you ever traveled for an extended period of time and wondered what was going on in your home in Mars Hill, GA? In order to prevent the necessity of water pipe repair, it is important to properly monitor your home while you are away.

Steps To Prevent Water Damage

In order to prevent water damage from a broken pipe while away from your home, here is a list of things you can do to prevent coming home to a house that is flooded.

  • Make sure that your heat is on to prevent pipes from freezing while you are away.
  • Have someone check on your home while you are gone or utilize a digital home monitoring system that can be viewed using your smart devices.
  • Check all the pipes in your water system and heating system before departing to make sure there are no cracks.
  • Ensure that your heating system is working correctly, that all necessary repairs have taken place and that the oil tank is filled if your home is heated by oil.
  • Look at the connections to your appliances to determine they are secure and there is no chance of a leak occurring.

It is important to take the necessary steps to prevent a leak and do your best to ensure that water pipe repair is not needed when you return home.

What if Water Damage Occurs?

Even with all the preventative measures, there is no guarantee that you will not come home to a broken pipe or some sort of water damage. If something has flooded while you were away, it is important to take the proper steps to dry your home and personal property. Shut off the main water valve if the leak has occurred in a pipe in order to prevent further damage. If the amount of water damage is severe, a professional water mitigation company can help to restore your home and prevent future issues.

Sitting water can be harmful to your home. Prevent it if you can, and don’t be afraid to ask for help with water pipe repair when it is necessary.

Roof Readiness: Protecting Your Roof Against Impending Winter Storms

Roof Preparedness: Keeping Your Roof Safe During Winter Storms

While the inclement and frigid weather of Davis Crossroads, GA, is predictable and leads many homeowners to have emergency restoration services on speed dial, a home doesn’t have to be a victim to any looming winter storm. There are at least four practical steps homeowners can take to help ensure they quite literally maintain the roof over their heads.

1. Clear and Maintain Your Gutters

Cleaning out your gutters is not just a springtime gig. Maintaining clean gutters year-round helps to ensure that your roof remains structurally sound. In the winter, clogged gutters can lead to ice buildup, which eventually accumulates under your shingles and can lead to roof rot.

2. Trim Your Trees

The last thing you want to experience during a winter storm is the thunderous boom of a maple plummeting through your living room ceiling. Maintaining and trimming your trees at the change of every season can help you avoid the chaos and property loss from loose branches or rotted out trunks.

3. Replace Missing or Damaged Flashing

Missing or damaged flashing can allow the ice and snow of a blizzard to seep into your attic space. Once moisture enters in, it can lead to the development and spread of mold, mildew and rot. Before the winter settles in, you may want to perform a visual inspection of your roofline to ensure everything is hunky-dory.

4. Repair and Inspect Your Chimney

In addition to inspecting your roof for cosmetic damage, like missing shingles, you should also examine your chimney. A leaning chimney or a chimney with old and cracking mortar can cause significant roof damage if not dealt with before the cold sets in. Frigid temperatures and exposure to ice can cause old or already cracking mortar to separate and fail. Additionally, if your chimney is already leaning, then the added weight of snow and ice can cause it to collapse.

Before any winter storm has time to pummel your roof, take the time to inspect it and the surrounding area. Stay safe and keep your roof over your head.

Preventative Measures Against Water Damage

Water Damage Preventative Measures

When dealing with problematic water in the home, sometimes complacency is the biggest enemy. Many leak or flood scenarios are a result of a process that occurs over a long period of time. Early prevention is key to ensuring that your property in Macland, GA, stays dry.

1. Air Systems

Defective HVAC units are one major cause of leaks in the home. A broken pipe leading to or from the unit can cause visible condensation that accumulates and drips into the insulation below. Cold weather or improper operation can also cause the unit to freeze, resulting in periodic thawing that also creates problematic dripping. Overly-humid air can lead to pockets of moisture buildup over time, exacerbating these issues. Regular inspection of heating and air conditioning systems is necessary to prevent retention of water in the home.

2. Appliances and Related Plumbing

Dishwashers, refrigerators and other appliances need maintenance as well. Corrosion or mechanical wear can cause cracks or fit issues on pipes, gaskets and valves that connect your appliances to your home’s plumbing system. An appropriate pipe cleanup procedure involves both replacement of the broken components and a removal of any lingering water or soaked flooring or drywall surrounding the leak.

3. The Bathroom

Given the volume of water that moves through a typical bathroom, it should be no surprise that leakage can ensue there as well. Toilet drains and shower fixtures should also be inspected frequently to determine that water is only moving through the intended drainage channels. Again, persistent condensation, discoloration or oxidized metal surfaces can be indicative of a problem.

In short, drainage and ventilation keep a home dry. A single point of failure in any of these systems can be enough to cause substantial damage given enough time. Remember, if standing water in the home becomes a severe enough problem, it may be necessary to contact a professional cleanup service.

Diminish Fire Risk in Your Commercial Office With These Tips

12/23/2021 (Permalink)

Office Fire Office Fire

Our homes and our businesses in Red Rock, GA or Macland, GA are our castles, which is why we work hard to make them as safe and secure as possible. Unfortunately, there are some hazards that may not be obvious and can cause damage to your office, in the form of fire or water damage. Even more unfortunate? The cost of these damages, which could run into the thousands of dollars, and can come out of your pocket—whether you’re an individual homeowner or a business owner or landlord. Here are some common causes of fire and water damage in commercial office buildings, as well as tips on how to prevent them from occurring and damaging your home or commercial property.

Understanding Building Fire Damage

Most office building fires are small. But even a small fire can do a lot of damage if it gets out of control or isn’t contained early on. One of the biggest dangers is smoke and fire damage to your home or commercial office's interiors. Smoke can permeate materials, carpets, walls, flooring, ceilings—even drywall joints—leaving hidden danger behind long after flames have been extinguished. Even if you can’t see any visible signs of fire or smoke damage, you should always have an experienced professional examine your property for lingering toxins from before you move back in.

According to this report by the NFPA, there are 7 main causes of fires in commercial office buildings. Cooking Equipment, Electrical distribution and lighting equipment, heating equipment, intentional damage, smoking materials, exposure to other fire sources, and electronic, office, or entertainment equipment. This statistic includes general business offices, banks, veterinary or research offices, engineering, mailing firms, and post offices.

Common Causes of Commercial Building Fires

Most office fires are caused by cooking equipment, accounting for slightly over one in every four commercial office fires. However, while these fires are the most common, they do not account for most of the property damage to office buildings. That position is taken by the intentional damage category. Intentional damage alone accounts for a full 20% of commercial fire property damage. Intentional Property Damage occurs when a person seeks to purposely damage the office property through arson.

Two other leading causes of fire in office buildings are heating equipment, electrical distribution, and lighting equipment. Together, they account for 18% of property damage to commercial office buildings. These can include things such as space heaters, light fixtures, electrical wiring, outlets, electrical appliances, extension cords, and more.

While lower on the list, smoking materials, electronic, office, or entertainment equipment account for 12% of commercial office property damage.

Lastly, exposure fires, as defined by the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), are fires resulting from another fire outside of the commercial building itself. This kind of commercial fire damage accounted for 18% of property loss.

What Can I Do To Prevent A Building Fire?

If your building was constructed with modern building materials, fire damage should be a rare occurrence. But it can still happen if you’re not careful. Make sure all smoking materials are safely extinguished before leaving work each day. A smoldering cigarette can ignite more easily than you think. Also, make sure to regularly inspect your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire suppression systems to ensure they’re working properly. If a smoke alarm goes off for no reason at all, make sure to replace or recharge its batteries immediately.

The NFPA uncovered another intriguing statistic about fires on weekends and between the nighttime hours of 7 pm and 7 am. 19% of fires occurred on weekends but accounted for 31% of fire-related property losses. Meanwhile, fires at night accounted for less than one-third of office property fires, yet caused 67% of direct property damage due to fires.

Automatic Fire Detection & Fire Extinguishing Systems: This shows that one of the most important steps you can take towards protecting your office building from fire damage is to install and maintain automatic detection and fire extinguishing systems.

Camera monitoring systems such as those installed by videosurveillance.com or Pelco would be best for large-scale commercial properties. Otherwise, self-installed solutions such as those recommended in this article by PC Mag will work well.

For fire suppression systems, the best solution is to pay a proper fire protection services consultant such as Fire Protection Services LLC. Make sure to ask them to help you develop and implement a fire suppression system maintenance plan.

Cooking Equipment Fire Prevention: The best way to prevent fires with cooking equipment is to train your staff properly in its use, cleaning, and maintenance. For more on cooking equipment fire prevention, be sure to refer to our article on reducing the risk of commercial kitchen fires here.

Electrical Hazards Fire Prevention: When it comes to electrical distribution and lighting equipment, there is a multitude of reasons why fire may start. But according to this article by firerescue1.com, faulty outlets or appliances, light fixtures, extension cords, space heaters, and wiring issues were the 5 most common electrical fire causes.

To prevent faulty outlet or wiring fire hazards, the first step is to make sure to have a certified electrical contractor or property inspector review your commercial property before purchase. Even if you or a tenant are already occupying your commercial office space, a proper inspection by a certified electrical contractor to ensure code compliance of all building materials and installations will protect you from potentially expensive fire repairs. This is especially important to protect you from having to pay for potential property damages out of pocket.

To protect your commercial property from fire damage due to light fixtures or extension cords, the most important tip is to ensure you follow the manufacturer's maximum recommended wattage and amperage guidance.

A good rule of thumb for selecting an extension cord is the smaller the wire gauge rating, the greater the capacity. According to this article by the Spruce, 12-gauge extension cords can handle up to 1920 watts (16 Amps), 14-gauge cords can handle 1440 watts (12 Amps), 16-gauge  can handle 840 Watts (7 Amps), and 18-gauge cords 600 Watts (5 Amps). In addition to wattage capacities, another thing you should look at when choosing a commercial electrical power solution is cord lengths. The longer the cord, the more important it becomes to have a higher wattage extension cord.

For light fixtures, you should follow manufacturer guidelines to prevent property fire damage. However, what you should look out for are potentially dangerous light bulb wattages and materials around your lighting fixtures that could catch fire. High-wattage incandescent bulbs installed on light fixtures that are rated for lower-wattage bulbs can spark flames because of overheating. Also, keeping flammable materials around light fixtures, or allowing dust buildup increases the risk for fire damage.

Fire Restoration Is the Science of Turning Chaos Into Order

Fire Restoration Process

You will never forget how your home looked after the last firefighter left. It was a disaster. Everything was burned, charred, or soaked. Your beautiful hardwood floors were starting to buckle, the water was leaking into the rooms below, and everything smelled like smoke. You wondered how you could recover from this. The following three steps will help you understand the cleanup process.

1. Your New Enemies Are Water and Time
The fire is out, but your disaster continues to grow in slow motion. Now, the culprit is water. It is slowly working its way through your home. It is also setting the stage for mold to move in and make the cleanup more difficult. The objective here is to get the moisture out of your home quickly. This stage of fire restoration involves removing:

  • Standing water
  • Carpets, if not salvageable in place
  • Fabrics
  • Furniture
  • Wallboard, flooring and anything else that is not salvageable

Once the room is empty, it’s time to bring in fans and dehumidifiers. Now might also be an excellent time to apply mold-suppression products to wet areas, if appropriate.

2. Remove Everything That Is Burned and Not Restorable
Think of this as the demolition phase. Remove everything that the fire touched. If you decide to leave some charred wood in place, seal it. If you don’t, you will never get the smoky burnt smell entirely out of your home.

3. Eliminate the Smoky Smell That Permeates Your Home
Smoke damage is often the most difficult to mitigate. In extreme cases, it can require:

  • Air filtration to remove the smell from the air
  • Intense treatment by ozone generators
  • Deodorization by special thermal foggers

Damage Cleaning Is Not for the Do-It-Yourselfer
The average person does not have the knowledge or equipment to do the fire restoration quickly and thoroughly. Consider bringing in fire damage mitigation experts located in the Lost Mountain, GA, area if you face this type of cleanup. When you see the results, you will be glad you did.

What Happens When Pipes Freeze?

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

Insulation for pipes It is a good idea to add insulation to pipes that are at risk of freezing.

Freezing temperatures can lead to broken pipes. Find out why pipes freeze and how to prevent water damage at a commercial building in Kennesaw, GA.

Causes of Frozen Pipes

Pipes with insufficient insulation may freeze when exposed to cold weather. This is most common with pipes that are:

  • Against exterior walls
  • Exposed to below-freezing temperatures
  • In unheated areas

Water expands as it freezes and puts pressure on pipes. As the pressure increases, so does the risk that pipes will break and cause water damage.

How To Protect Exposed Pipes

It is a good idea to add insulation to pipes that are at risk of freezing. A building owner or facility manager may use:

  • Heat tape or cable
  • Pipe sleeves
  • Newspaper

Newspaper is only recommended for emergency protection in regions that rarely experience freezing temperatures. Wrap at least a quarter-inch of paper around a pipe to provide some insulation.

How To Prevent Pipes From Freezing

A property owner or facilities manager can take other preventative measures inside a building. These include:

  • Allowing water to drip from faucets served by exposed pipes
  • Maintaining the same interior temperature day and night
  • Heating a building that will be unoccupied for several days to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit

These methods can reduce the likelihood that pipes will freeze. If a pipe freezes, keep the affected faucet turned on and use a heating pad, hair dryer, or space heater near the blockage. If the frozen portion of a pipe is not accessible, contact a plumber.

Pipes that freeze will experience a significant increase in pressure. Broken pipes and water damage may result. In the event of a pipe burst, contact a plumber. If the damage is severe, a building owner or manager should arrange for water cleanup and damage restoration. Take steps to insulate pipes and other preventative measures before temperatures dip below freezing in Kennesaw, GA.

Fire Prevention Tips for Your Commercial Kitchen

11/30/2021 (Permalink)

Fire in commercial kitchen while cooking Fire in commercial kitchen while cooking

If you own a bar, restaurant, or commercial kitchen in Acworth & Davis Crossroads, this article is for you. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fire departments responded to over 7,410 structure fires in the kitchen of restaurants and bars in 2017 alone. The majority of these fires were preventable, resulting in three deaths, 110 injuries, and $165 million in property damage annually in commercial kitchens. Don’t get caught unprepared with these quick and easy commercial kitchen maintenance tips.

Practice Proper Maintenance & Inspection in Your Commercial Facility

The first step towards proper maintenance to prevent a commercial kitchen fire in your facility is to create a regular plan for inspections. While you can do these yourself, it is often a good idea to consider outsourcing this service to a proper NICET Certified Fire Inspector. Depending on the volume of cooking in your commercial kitchen, they will likely recommend monthly, quarterly, or annual inspections to ensure compliance and safety.

On regular inspections, fire inspectors will provide the best guidance on where you should focus your team's routine maintenance time and resources. Ultimately, it is up to you as an owner or manager on how closely you implement those recommendations.

Typically, at least the vent, hood, and duct must be cleaned regularly to remove grease vapor and prevent combustible material build-up. Grease Filters should be cleaned at least once per week, and your automatic fire suppression system should be inspected at least every 6 months or as required by your local regulations. Regular cleaning according to equipment specifications should be observed as well.

What To Do If There Is a Fire In My Commercial Kitchen?

If you can, get everyone out safely. If you have an outdoor exit, have people leave that way. Do not open any interior doors or windows or use elevators during a fire. Even if it seems like it’s far away, do not stop to pick up personal belongings. Unless it’s your home, never go back inside during or after a fire. Once you are safe, call 911 immediately and stay on the line until help arrives. Once firefighters arrive on the scene they will assess if there is still a risk for injury within any structure fires before allowing you to re-enter your building.

Next, you should call a fire restoration expert like SERVPRO of NW Cobb to help you quickly restore your commercial kitchen to an operational state.

3 Common Water Issues That Could Affect Your Office

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Water seeping from a wall in an office. Water seeped in from a crack in the foundation.

Three Common Situations to Look Out For

Owning a commercial property in Davis Crossroads, GA comes with various maintenance responsibilities. One of the most important things you can do to keep your building safe is to inspect it regularly for potential water issues. Leaking pipes can become a big problem if they go undetected for too long. Here are three common situations to look out for.

1. Foundation Problems

If your office building settles unevenly, it can cause all sorts of difficulties. A cracked or compromised foundation can make existing plumbing problems worse or cause new complications. What starts as tree roots burrowing into the foundation or sewer lines can turn into a pipe break or structural deterioration that affects the whole building. Have your foundation inspected at least once a year to find hidden damage. Have any noticeable cracks repaired as soon as possible.

2. Pipe Damage

Many things can cause your pipes or sewer lines to leak. Old lines deteriorate over time, and freezing temperatures can lead to burst or leaking pipes. If you smell sewer gas or see puddles in unusual places, it's a good idea to contact a plumber to investigate potential sewer troubles. If your ceiling tiles or walls bulge out or have water spots, you likely have pipe destruction behind them. Water restoration specialists can mitigate the water damage after the pipe is repaired.

3. Fixture Leaks

Sometimes small troubles can turn into disasters. For example, a toilet backup is relatively easy to fix unless it isn't cleaned thoroughly. Then it can cause extensive decay to the flooring beneath it and the ceiling of the lower level. A leak around or under a sink not only wastes water but can weaken the structure holding up the sink, causing the need for more repairs over time.
Leaking pipes and other water malfunctions can cause a lot of damage, but they can also usually be fixed before the problems get out of hand. Frequent inspections and timely repairs can lower your overall maintenance costs.

4 Things To Do To Keep Your Children Safe During a House Fire

Keeping Your Children Safe During a Fire

During a home fire in Mars Hill, GA, your kids safety is one of your top priorities. In the event of a fire, your children need to know what to do to get out of the house unharmed. Check out these four tips to keep your children safe during a fire.

1. Know What the Smoke Alarm Sounds Like

Teach your children how a smoke alarm sounds when there is a fire. You can press the test button on the device to give them a glimpse of what it will sound like. You can also share videos with them to introduce the sound.

2. Have an Escape Plan

Work with your children to create a fire escape plan. The evacuation plan should go over all possible exits. While practicing the plan, teach your children how to get out of a room through the windows and the doors. Make the drawings for the escape routes easy for children to understand and leave a copy in each room.

3. Get Low, Not High

Your youngsters need to know that they should stay low to the ground during a fire instead of standing up. This is because smoke and heat rise, and also to prevent smoke inhalation. Teach your children how to crawl through rooms and hallways quickly. Practice this each month and use a timer to gauge how quickly everyone can make it out of the house.

4. Get Out and Stay Out

For your kids safety, make sure they understand that once they get out of the house, they should not go back into the house for anything. It is too dangerous, and there will be a lot of fire damage that will need to be cleaned up. If your children see that a person or pet is missing, they should alert a firefighter or another adult.
Teach your children what to do during a home fire. For your kids safety, this includes knowing what the smoke alarm sounds like, having an escape plan, staying close to the ground to get out of the house and staying out of the house.

Top 4 Things You Need To Do To Prepare for a Fire

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

Man Installing Smoke Or Carbon Monoxide Detector Install smoke alarms in your home.

Fire Preparation Tips

As a homeowner in Red Rock, GA, you need to prepare yourself for a variety of worst case scenarios. You may make plans for bad weather, faulty plumbing and house fires to ensure you can bounce back from any unexpected event. Fire preparation should include preventative measures as well as practicing what to do in case of an emergency.

1. Have a fire drill. Making sure your entire family knows what to do in the case of an emergency is a must. During a fire drill, you should show everyone what the alarm sounds like, how to safely exit a room and where to meet outside of the home. For the highest level of fire safety, you may want to encourage everyone to have at least two exit strategies in mind for each room in the house. For example, you could leave a bedroom through the door or a window.

2. Install smoke alarms. A home fire is often detected by smoke alarms. If you do not have this safety equipment properly installed throughout your house, a fire may blaze without you knowing.

3. Check smoke alarms. Once the alarm is in place, your fire preparation is not over. You also need to make sure it can work. You should do an alarm check at least once every month. If you don't, the batteries inside may die without you realizing it.

4. Figure out who to call. Everyone knows to call emergency responders after a home fire, but you may also want to decide what type of residential fire remediation team you would like to work with if flames engulf your house. Getting in touch with these experts prior to a fire can speed up the restoration process.

Being proactive in your fire preparation ensures your entire family will know what to do if there ever is a fire in your house. Once you have made the preparations, you can sit back and hope to never put them into action.

When Are Flood Cuts Necessary?

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

drywall removal from water damage, concept of a flood cut Flooded building in Mars Hill, GA.

Storm or water damage that results in flooding may necessitate a flood cut. This procedure involves cutting out drywall approximately one foot above the highest level of flood damage to assess the presence of moisture behind a wall. Here are several situations when this mitigation method may be necessary.

When Water Damage Occurs

Water damage involves one of three categories:

• Category One water is clean. A Category One leak is typically caused by a broken supply pipe.
• Category Two water or gray water contains chemicals or microbes. This water may come from a dishwasher, shower, or washing machine.
• Category Three water or black water is highly contaminated. This water may contain sewage, solid waste, or toxigenic substances.

A flood cut will probably be necessary for damage involving contamination from Category Two or Category Three water. Category One leaks that make contact with walls without insulation should not require a flood cut and can be dried. Category One water may start to degrade if left standing for days.

After Flooding

Most flood water is Category Three, and necessitates a tear out of porous building materials such as drywall or insulation. If a commercial property is flooded with one foot of water, a mitigation expert will perform a flood cut at the two-foot level. Insulation exposed to any type of water cannot be safely dried, poses an increased mold risk, and will need to be removed and replaced.

If Mold Is an Issue

Contaminated water sources exacerbate the risk of mold growth. Mold can start to grow if water is left standing or excessive moisture persists for 24 to 72 hours. Mold tests may also require that experts make controlled cuts.

Flood cuts are usually necessary after a building is exposed to flooding. If water damage occurs at a commercial property in Mars Hill, GA, contact a water and storm damage restoration service.

When There's Water Damage, Mold Is Usually Not Far Behind

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

Mold on Water Damaged Wall Mold Growing on Wet Wall

When there’s water damage, mold is usually not far behind. As water continues to persist, it can often lead to the growth of mold spores. When these spores are allowed to grow without proper restoration services, they can quickly spread over your home or business. It’s important to take care of this problem as soon as possible by calling an experienced water restoration service provider right away if you notice mold developing in your home or business after a flood or other large loss of water.

Can Water Cause Mildew & Mold?

Depending on where your home or office is located, water damage may cause mold. That’s because mold thrives in damp environments with organic materials. It can even grow in basements when you have an excessive amount of water that remains there for extended periods of time. For example, if you live in a flood zone and floodwaters remain in your basement for several days at a time, it could be hard to prevent mildew & mold from forming.

Is Mold Removal a Part of Water Restoration Services?

In many cases, mold removal is an integral part of water restoration services. While mold spores may take several days to reach significant quantities, many water restoration services include biocide and chemical applications to prevent mold proliferation after water damage.

The long-term effects of mold exposure are not well understood and may vary from person to person. Some people are more prone to health effects than others; some people don't seem affected at all. So if you're experiencing water damage, don't hesitate; contact your local professionals for water restoration services as soon as possible. A little prevention goes a long way!

How Fast Does Mold Grow After a Water Leak?

If you ever experience a water leak in your home or business and don’t deal with it immediately (you should know that water damage is one of our specialties), mold could begin to grow almost immediately. It can take as little as 24-48 hours for mold to develop on organic surfaces with continuous moisture.

When is Mold Remediation Required?

If you’ve had water damage to your home or business that wasn’t resolved properly, mold may already be growing inside. If you suspect mold growth in your home or business and see it in multiple areas or across an area greater than 10 square feet, it’s important to act quickly to prevent its spread. Depending on where mold is found, both professional remediation and removal could be required.

Creating a fire escape plan will make sure you are prepared to leave your home quickly if a fire occurs. These three steps will show you how to create your plan.

1. Initiate and Practice Your Plan

One of the most important ways you can prepare for a fire in Davis Crossroads, GA, is to create a customized emergency escape plan. With your family, first locate the exits in your home, including all windows and doors. Once you know where every exit is, practice leaving your home in a timely, safe manner. Make sure your family has picked out a nearby location to meet up with one another after escaping the home. Every six months, you need to practice your plan with your family.

2. Install and Assess Alarms

Part of your fire escape plan should focus on making sure you will be alerted immediately if a fire breaks out in your home. If you haven’t already done so, install smoke alarms throughout your home; place alarms in all bedrooms, and make certain that alarms are on each floor of your home. If you already have alarms installed, check your smoke alarms frequently and change the batteries as necessary.

3. Know Whom To Contact

If a fire damages your home, it’s important to know whom to contact. The American Red Cross can help your family begin to recover. Knowing the contact information for your local Red Cross will allow you to quickly get in touch with the right people, and together, they will assist you in moving forward.

Hopefully, you will never need to use your fire escape plan in a true emergency. However, it is essential to be prepared. Having a solid plan in place can protect your family from harm and keep you safe.

Fire Preparation Tips Every Business Owner Needs To Know

Smoke detectors on evacuation plans You should also implement a plan that will ensure all building occupants

Fire Preparation Tips

A commercial fire can wreak havoc not just on a business's property, but on a business's revenue as well. Fire damage often involves three types of damage: fire, smoke, and water damage. For this reason, fire restoration efforts often take much longer than other types of restoration labor—and cost three times as much. Fortunately, you can take measures to prevent such a huge financial hit with the right fire preparation efforts. Here are a few steps you can take to minimize damage and losses:

  • Perform a disaster risk analysis.
  • Devise and practice emergency and recovery plans.
  • Invest in the right coverage.
  • Back up important files.
  • Take inventory.

Perform a Risk Analysis

If you don't know your risk, you cannot adequately prepare for it. For instance, if you live in a fire prone area, fortifying your building against flooding and earthquakes may not save you. Disaster preparation only works if you prepare for the right kind of disaster. In addition to protecting your building against the right kinds of disaster, you should also assess how each type of disaster would impact your business and what you can do to mitigate the costs.

Develop a Fire Preparation Plan

Safety should be your utmost concern, even above cost. In addition to taking measures to protect your building, you should also implement a plan that will ensure all building occupants can exit easily and safely in the event of an actual fire. Assign roles to capable and willing employees and hold drills to ensure that everyone knows how to respond in the event of a real emergency.

Invest in the Right Coverage

You can do everything in your power to prevent a fire, but that doesn't necessarily mean one won't happen. If a fire does result in a full or partial loss, the cost can be great to your business. The right coverage can help shoulder the financial burden and even reimburse you for losses that stem from business interruption.

If you don't have a fire preparation plan, it's time to build one. Talk to your Red Rock, GA, fire restoration team about the elements of a sound safety plan.

Mold growth along ceiling. While mold contamination is not something a homeowner wants to happen in their home, your house is salvageable.

How a Remediation Company Seals a Mold Infestation

One of the worst things for a homeowner to come across is the unique musty smell of mold. The last thing you want to consider is that you are dealing with mold contamination, but if the scent is there, then that is a powerful indicator of a problem. The best thing to do is call a mold remediation company in Macland, GA, to assess your property and test the air quality of the home. If they find mold, then they will work to remove it, but first, they will need to contain it using IICRC protocols.

1. Seal the area 2. Wet the wall3. Remove contaminated surfacers 4. Clean and sterilize

Seal The Area
Depending on the level of contamination, the remediation crew will need to seal off the affected space. They will probably use plastic sheeting, securing it to the walls, doors, windows, and vents with tape. The aim is to restrict airflow and limit further exposure to the rest of the house.

Wet the Wall
While it may seem strange, the team will use spray bottles to mist the mold contamination gently with water. Dampening the surface is necessary to limit the movement of the mold spores. Spores are tiny microscopic organisms that make up a colony and spread quickly on air currents. Wetting these spores ensures they do not move.

Remove Contaminated Surfaces
Next, the team will begin cutting away the infestation, removing drywall, insulation, and wood. It can be difficult for a homeowner to see a piece of their home being cut away but rest assured, all will be restored.

Clean and Sterilize
The last thing the remediation crew will do is to clean and sterilize the space before restoring it. They will use commercial cleaners and probably clean surfaces several times, testing the area to make sure the contamination is removed.

While mold contamination is not something a homeowner wants to happen in their home, your house is salvageable. Contact a licensed removal expert for help.

Rain on roof. It's hard to tell if you need roof repair from just a glance.

Steps To Take After A Storm

High winds and hail can cause a lot of damage to your roof. If you don't get roof repair before the next storm hits Davis Crossroads, GA, this can lead to even greater damage. By being proactive, you can make sure your roof is protecting your home no matter what the weather is doing. Here are some steps to take after a storm to make sure your roof is still intact.

Inspection
You may not be able to see any roof damage after a bad storm, but that doesn't mean it's not there. Have your roof inspected by a professional. During the inspection, experts check every part of the roof:

  • Membrane structure
  • Flashing
  • Decking
  • Shingles
  • Insulation

Inspectors also check for water damage, especially if part of the roof is compromised. If insulation or other materials below the roof membrane are wet, it could lead to mold growth in a short amount of time. Such damage would require additional repairs and mitigation. Early detection and efficient roof repair can save you a lot of time and money.

Remediation
If the wind damage on your roof is extensive, you likely have water damage inside your attic or upper floors. Once you hire a contractor to fix the roof, flood restoration specialists can mitigate the problems caused by saturated materials inside your home. They start by assessing the extent of the damage and tearing out everything they can't fix. Then they clean and dry the space. Finally, they rebuild the area so that it matches the materials around it, restoring your home to the condition is was in before the storm hit. Identifying the problem early helps the whole process go more smoothly.

It's hard to tell if you need roof repair from just a glance. Professional inspectors can locate damage and make recommendations for fast resolution. By taking care of the damage both inside and outside your home, you can avoid further problems.

3 Common Sources for Water Damage to Businesses

9/20/2021 (Permalink)

Standing water in business. Even if a broken pipe or other situation takes you by surprise, a water damage restoration company can utilize water repair on your property.

Water is a necessary utility to business operations, but it can quickly become a nuisance if uncontained from a broken pipe or similar issue. By being vigilant of these three common situations, you can prevent your Acworth, GA, business from major flooding.

1. Sprinkler System Defects

Sprinkler systems are a helpful layer of protection from fire. Unfortunately, they lead to water damage from deploying to stop a fire or accidentally going off from a defect. The only preventable one of these two is an accidental discharge.

To stop a sprinkler system from unintentionally flooding your business, it is advised to regularly have a sprinkler professional inspect the system. You can catch and treat most problems to save your business from unnecessary water damage.

2. Pipe Problems

A leaky pipe can easily become a broken pipe with enough water flow. It is important to properly care for your pipes. They should be kept clear of blockage and unclogged if you notice they are draining slowly.

As a special consideration for cold weather, pipes are susceptible to bursting if left to freeze. To prevent a burst, the pipes need to be drained before the season and thawed if they do become frozen during the cold months.

3. Sewage Overflow

A sewer or toilet overflow threatens your business with more severe water damage due to the contaminants. The overflow is typically caused by tree roots growing into the sewer line or extensive buildup in the disposal system.

Keeping the drains cleaned by a professional will save you from this messy problem. A sewer backup valve, if your business is not equipped with one, makes sewage only able to go one way and unable to flow back.

Water Damage Can be Stopped Regardless

Even if a broken pipe or other situation takes you by surprise, a professional water damage restoration company can utilize water repair on your property and assets. You should be mindful to stop common water problems from damaging your business, but there is a remedy to anything not prevented.

Steps To Eradicate and Prevent Bathroom Mold

Pink & orange mold growth in bathroom. A bathroom mildew problem does not have to turn into a major issue.

A mold problem in your bathroom is an unsightly mess. Furthermore, if left untreated, it can grow into a bigger problem that requires professional remediation. If your home in Acworth, GA, has a problem with bathroom mildew due to excess humidity or swamp coolers, you can take steps to get rid of it and prevent it from returning.

1. Assessing the Situation

The first step to solving a problem is defining what exactly the problem is. Significant mold growth is going to require the services of mold remediation experts. Once it gets past a certain point, trying to resolve the problem yourself may only make it worse. If you catch mildew in its beginning stages, however, you can likely clean it up without the aid of professionals.

2. Choosing Your Tools

If the bathroom mildew problem is small enough to handle yourself, you need to have the appropriate tools for cleaning it. You will need some sort of scrubbing devices, such as a brush or steel wool. If the surface is delicate in any way, a brush is probably the better way to go. You will also need a cleaner. You can use a commercial cleaner designed specifically for mildew removal or you can concoct a homemade remedy of baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar.

3. Scrubbing the Area

Using your scrubbing device and cleaner, scrub the area vigorously. It is going to take a lot of elbow grease to overcome stubborn mildew stains, but it can be done.

4. Preventing its Return

Mold and mildew tend to thrive in areas with a humidity problem. Have swamp coolers serviced regularly to control leakage. Increase airflow as much as possible to the bathroom. If necessary, use a dehumidifier to dry the air out, making it less likely for mold to grow.

A bathroom mildew problem does not have to turn into a major issue. With the right tools and heavy scrubbing, you can eradicate the mildew. By controlling humidity, you can discourage its return.

While this can seem impossible when a natural disaster is approaching, having some key ideas in mind for flood safety can prevent you and your loved ones from potential harm. Here are four safety tips to remember before or during a flood.

1. Create an emergency kit before such an event. Gathering supplies before the onslaught emerges head-on can be a crucial task for keeping you not only safe but level-headed once it happens. Knowing you have items such as bandages, flashlights, basic medicine, blankets, etc. can help keep your mind at ease, even before any flooding occurs.

2. Store food and water resources in a nearby, easy-to-reach place. Whether you’re dealing with an impending storm or you’re already in the thick of it, having access to at least three days worth of food and water - up to one gallon a day per person - is essential for flood safety.

3. Turn off your home’s utilities. When flooding begins in your neighborhood or water begins to build up in your home, it can be vital to turn off your home’s main power switch and gas line to prevent any possible electrical shocks or other deadly mishaps.

4. If flooding forces you out of your home, be on high alert when you’re traveling. Avoiding any areas subject to flooding such as canyons, low spots, water reservoirs, and other potential red-flag points is vastly important, as is remaining vigilant when traveling across any submerged roads.

Black mold growth on white wall. Mold damage Mold growing on the wall.

What You Should Know About Mold

The last thing you want to find in your Mars Hill, GA, business is a patch of fuzzy gray mold growing on the wall, in the fridge or between the pages of a book. It can be unsettling, and you surely have questions. Before you panic and reach for the bleach, make sure you know exactly what you’re up against with this helpful list of frequently asked questions regarding mold growth.

1. What is mold, and what causes it?

Mold is a type of fungus, meaning it is a living organism. It releases spores, which can affect air quality in indoor spaces. Also, mold feeds on whatever it grows on: food, wood, paper, and other porous surfaces. If you find mold in your building, it means that the air is too moist. High humidity and water damage can cause mold if not dealt with properly.

2. How do you get rid of it?

The most important factor in removing mold from your building is moisture control. You can use detergent and water to clean mold from most surfaces, but this alone will not stop mold growth. The root of the problem lies in the levels of humidity in your home. To prevent regrowth, address the moisture problem.

3. How do you prevent mold?

The key to mold prevention is moisture control. Use dehumidifiers if you notice your home is feeling humid, and routinely open the windows to improve circulation. Never paint over mold, as the fungus may keep growing under the paint. After experiencing water damage, remove moisture from the space immediately. Thoroughly dry all affected surfaces within 48 hours of the incident, and consult with mold remediation professionals if you have any concerns.

Remember: the absolute most important step in keeping mold out of your Mars Hill, GA, building is keeping the humidity under control. It thrives in damp environments, so whether you are currently dealing with an outbreak or simply hoping to prevent mold growth down the line, make moisture control your top priority.

Always Think Fire Safety

  • Putting out candles when you cannot actively monitor them
  • Turning off space heaters or other flame sources when not awake
  • Putting out cigarettes with water and keeping them away from flammable garbage
  • Moving flammable objects a few feet away from heaters, ovens or fireplaces

Your next step in fire preparation is to clean and test your smoke detectors regularly. They should be occasionally dusted to allow them to work effectively. Once a month, the test button on one unit should be pressed to ensure all alarms are connected and functional so you can identify any that need unit or battery replacement.

Have a Plan

Everyone in your home should know the procedure for a home fire. You should identify the fire escape routes and inform everyone in the home of them. Every resident should be advised to dial emergency services once safe from a major fire to get the fire department on the scene as soon as possible.

Your local water remediation team can help you quickly assess and respond to the damage. Your professional cleanup crew can also help you understand why fast action is important.

Get to the Source: Calling someone in to inspect water damage as soon as you notice it can help you figure out what caused the problem. If you simply clean up the standing water without a thought of what caused it, you may have more water in your home the next day or the next time it rains.

Stop Mold Growth: Bursting pipes often release clean water into your house. However, even clean water can introduce mold growth if it is left unattended for too long. Fast action keeps mold growth at bay because you take care of the excess moisture before the spores can start to grow.

Is Commercial Storm Damage Tax Deductible?

6/14/2021 (Permalink)

Building surrounded by stormwaters in Acworth, GA. Severe flood damage by storm in Acworth, GA.

After a storm in Acworth, GA you're left picking up the pieces in your business. Storm damage from a major event can permanently shutter businesses in the area affected. Generally, the businesses that do squeak by the need to scrounge every dollar they can to stay afloat.

How Bad Are the Odds?

In a major event, they're terrible. Small businesses generally are crushed when they're forced to close. After a major disaster:

  • 40% of businesses never reopen.
  • An additional 25% fail within a year.
  • A staggering 90% of small businesses fail within two years.

Will Insurance Beat the Odds?

If you have good coverage, it probably will but most small companies are not well-prepared for a real disaster. A Standard commercial insurance policy will cover storm damage such as wind, rain, and hail, but it doesn't cover either flood damage or business income lost.
If you're in an area that may flood, you should investigate flood insurance. With this policy in addition to your standard business policy, you should have full coverage for most kinds of damage.
Business interruption insurance is also usually a good deal; and a huge peace of mind issue. If you can afford this and all your damage is covered, you may not need to worry about tax deductions.

When Is Damage Deductible?

In most cases, damage from a storm that results in a loss to your business is tax-deductible. If insurance covers the damage, it's not a loss although your premiums are deductible, of course. Repairing damage from disasters such as a storm, earthquake or vandalism, is a legitimate business expense and as long as you itemize, you can write it off.

What About Major Disasters?

If a widespread disaster hits, you may be eligible for special tax deductions. However, it depends on the wording. Many special tax benefits are not available to commercial taxpayers. You can call your local storm damage restoration professionals who are available to advise about grants and tax credits as well as help you restore your building.
Losses may be tax deductible if they aren't covered by insurance. Just don't write off covered losses since it didn't actually cost you money.

Further, if you battle a humidity problem in your shower, you might find yourself struggling to remove stubborn mold and mildew. Do you prefer utilizing commercial cleaning solutions, or are natural, organic products your choice in agents? Luckily, either option can remove and prevent mold.

The Natural Method

If you favor natural cleaning processes, remove bathroom mildew using three common household ingredients.

First, apply baking soda to the grout, and pour distilled white vinegar over the soda to create a foamy paste. Utilizing your nylon brush, scrub away the mildew and mold, and follow up with a warm water rinse.

Alternatively, you may mix equal parts of vinegar and lemon juice and add baking soda until the mixture begins to bubble and foam. Dip your brush into this solution, and scrub the grout. After letting it soak for five minutes, use your brush to scour again. Rinse thoroughly with water.

The Commercial Method

Commercial cleaning agents are available in most grocery stores in Lost Mountain, GA, and are all effective at removing bathroom mildew. Keep in mind that the majority of solutions require ventilation to protect users from inhaling toxic fumes.
In terms of processes, commercial cleaners work in much the same manner as natural agents do. Most will instruct you to spray the affected grout, wait a certain amount of time, scrub with a brush, and rinse. In extreme cases, mold damage remediation specialists can assist.

Is Fire Damage Covered By Renters Insurance?

6/3/2021 (Permalink)

wooden frame structure burned in Acworth, GA Fire damage in Acworth, GA.

Tenants have the option to insure their possessions against fire damage by obtaining renters insurance. Find out more about this coverage to select the right policy.

What Renters Policies Cover

Renter's policies only cover damage to the contents of a rented domicile, namely the personal possessions of the named insured. This coverage can apply to a wide range of items:

  • Clothes
  • Furniture
  • Electronic
  • Personal possessions

Review the terms of a policy to make sure the amount of coverage is sufficient to compensate for replacement costs rather than actual cash value with depreciation. A small amount of additional coverage may also be available for liability. It is a good idea to make note of any requirements for obtaining coverage or filing a claim.

Limits and Other Coverage

Renters should make sure that the limit of a policy is high enough to account for the total value of the contents of a residence. Renters insurance policies are not intended to cover damage to building materials or any appliances or fixtures that belong to the landlord or property owner. If these materials or items sustain damage or are destroyed, these losses should be covered by the property insurance policy. It is the responsibility of the property owner or manager to arrange for fire restoration.

Making a Claim

After a fire damages the contents of a rental property, a tenant should document the damage and try to gather and provide receipts or other proof of purchase. Lists of damaged and destroyed content can make it easier to arrange for content cleaning or replace losses.

A tenant should take the time to carefully review the terms and limitations of any renters insurance policy. In the event of fire damage to the contents of an apartment or rental house in Acworth, GA, this coverage can help to offset the costs of professional content cleaning or replacement.

Why To Clean Fire-Damaged Electronics Offsite

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

Burned structure in Acworth, GA Fire and smoke damage in Acworth, GA.

Three Reasons To Remove Electronics That Have Been Exposed To High Heat

Business owners value the technology an enterprise uses, and are usually concerned about damage to computers and office electronics that have suffered a fire. A premature attempt to test or turn on these devices can end up causing irreparable damage or even an electrical fire at commercial property in Acworth, GA. Here are three reasons electronics that have been exposed to high heat, open flame, or smoke should be removed from the location of the fire for cleaning.

1. Increased Risk of Electrical Fires

Even if electronics have not been exposed to open flames, soot and smoke residue can form a film over internal components that causes electronics to short-circuit or overheat. The simple act of turning on a computer, device, or office appliance after a fire may be enough to start another fire.

2. The Need to Reduce Contamination

Attempting to clean contents in an environment that still has residual smoke or soot damage is likely to prove ineffective. Whether the cause of a blaze was an electrical fire or the ignition of combustible substances, smoke molecules run the risk of re-contaminating cleaned items until restoration is complete.

3. Clean Room Conditions and Equipment

A clean room is an ideal environment in which to attempt appliance, device, or computer cleanup. Measures are taken to control static electricity in these environments, which can reduce the danger that electric sparks could cause a fire. Clean rooms are also equipped with equipment that may make it possible to restore the condition of electronics or recover and transfer stored data.

Having electronics cleaned offsite in a dedicated facility reduces the risk of an electrical fire following an initial fire at a commercial structure. Content cleaning experts who specialize in electronics may be able to restore office appliances, computers, or devices with fire and smoke damage or recover valuable data.

3 Steps To Create a Home Fire Escape Plan

3/30/2021 (Permalink)

Map of a house and escape routes A fires escape plan can help keep your family safe when a fire occurs.

The Following Three Steps Can Help You Create Your Plan

Because fire can spread quickly, your family may have only one to two minutes to escape from the time a smoke alarm sounds. A fire escape plan can help ensure that your family can safely evacuate your home during a fire.

1. Include Your Entire Household
Everyone in your household needs to know what to do when a home fire occurs. As a group, you should walk through your home and make note of all possible exits. It may be helpful to draw a floorplan of your home and mark the location of all smoke alarms and two exits for every room. If you have any household member with special needs, such as mobility issues, children, or pets in your home you should make a plan to address their needs.

2. Choose a Meeting Place
Your fire escape plan should include a designated meeting place, such as a neighbor's house, mailbox, traffic sign or light post. Mark the meeting place on your plan and instruct the entire household to go to that place once they have exited the home. Choosing a meeting place will help you ensure that everyone is accounted for so you can alert any emergency personnel to someone who may be trapped in your home.

3. Memorize Emergency Phone Numbers
At a minimum, everyone in your household should know how to call 9-1-1 to report a house fire. It may also be helpful fire preparation to provide family members with other useful contact information, such as the phone number of a fire remediation company in Acworth, GA, or a contact number for a neighbor or family member who doesn't live in the home.
A fire escape plan can help keep your family safe when a house fire occurs. These three steps will get you started. You should review and update your plan as needed at least once every year.

Your roof protects your entire building and the people inside it. Scheduling routine roof inspections and repairs is a critical aspect of property management to prevent costly storm damage. A fragile roof under the weight of heavy snow or rain, or with exposure to strong winds, can ultimately lead to:

It is also prudent to remove any objects from a roof that can cause damage elsewhere if they are carried away by strong winds.

Clear the Property Grounds

All unsecured objects, including signs, outdoor furniture, stones and tree branches should be removed from the ground near your property immediately following a severe storm warning. Strong winds can hurl these objects through glass windows and doors or deposit them on your building's roof causing cracks.

Acquire a Generator

Many storms lead to widespread power outages which can negatively impact your business. Purchasing and maintaining a generator is vital to your storm preparedness plan and will ensure that your business continues to operate despite a loss of electricity.

Install Lightning Protection

Lightning that strikes your building can cause a fire, property loss or injury, and interrupt vital services. Thorough property management in storm-prone regions includes installing a lightning protection system that can reduce these risks.

Gather Insurance Details

Keep insurance details in an easily accessible place to prevent delays that could affect your coverage following storm damage. A disaster recovery service can help coordinate all post-storm cleanup efforts with your insurance provider.

Plan Communication Options

Lack of communication can make your building's residents anxious as they await guidance. Consider designating team members to communicate with tenants in each building section or installing an automated emergency alert system to send vital updates.

Storm preparedness can minimize the damage to your business following a severe storm.

Steps to Water Mitigation

SERVPRO tech extracting water from a carpet in Acworth, GA A leaking water heater can cause your home to flood.

Steps to Water Mitigation

One common cause for a flooded home that not many people think about is a leaking water heater. Water heaters sometimes contain up to 80 gallons of water, not to mention if the water is leaking from an incoming pipe. This much water can cause a tremendous amount of damage very quickly. Fortunately, water damage mitigation companies in Acworth, GA can help you with this problem.

Inspection
The first thing a remediation or mitigation company will perform is a thorough inspection of the water-damaged area. This includes:

  • Looking at the failed water heater
  • Looking for broken pipelines
  • Turning off water
  • Assessing the damage
  • Taking pictures for your insurance or warranty company.

The company will make a thorough report of all the damages they can see and some that might develop.

Removal and Drying

The next thing they will begin is removing damaged items, including your leaking water heater, drywall and flooring. Then they will begin the drying process. This process is done with fans, heaters, pumps, dehumidifiers, air scrubbers and other drying devices. They might also use protective measures such as capping off pipes that might be leaking or repairing cracks.

Decide What's Next

After the removal and drying phase, it is up to you and the company you hire to decide what is next. Obviously, replacing your broken water heater will be on the list, but you will also need to replace drywall, flooring and anything else that was damaged. This can involve a considerable amount of work.

Another issue is mold and mildew remediation. Anytime water is involved, this is a possibility. Most remediation and mitigation companies are well versed in taking care of these problems.
Unfortunately, a leaking water heater can cause extensive damage to your home and property. This is something that should be fixed as quickly as possible before it can cause more damage. Mitigation and remediation companies can help provide you with a comprehensive plan to make things right.

Fire Cleanup Stages

Fire restoration is a complex process involving more than merely dealing with ashen walls. Commercial owners in Acworth, GA, face several significant hurdles to return the structure into a safe, functional space. Proprietors should expect to handle multiple stages and concepts over several weeks to months, depending on the severity of the destruction. Working with insurance and a remediation team may simplify the process as business leaders move through the following fire cleanup stages.

1. Secure the Facility
Before a fire rebuild happens, the premises must be contained, safeguarding the establishment from additional property harm as well as potential lawsuits. Expert care is given to board up any exposures in the roof or walls, preventing wind and rain from hurting the structure. Also, trespassers, robbers and vagrants see a burnt building as an easy target. It’s essential to work with people who understand how to defend the entire structure.

2. Survey the Building’s Damage
During fire restoration, crews must think about several elements:

A water remediation company such as SERVPRO has experts in all of these fields, capable of saving agencies and owners from calling multiple services. Instead, tied into one team, they collaborate to establish efficient, methodical restoration.

3. Treat the Space and Belongings
Specialists use high-tech equipment to salvage electronics, photos and documents, and items deemed especially valuable and hard to replace during rebuilding services. This assists in cost replacement.
The general location is dried to avoid secondary issues such as mold. With that complete, those employees can directly contact a crew to begin washing and scrubbing the facility. A final group of construction staff repairs anything torn out or burnt through.
Fire restoration demands focus, concentration and teamwork since so many stages are required. With a group working as one, owners and agents streamline the efforts and simplify contact information, making the ordeal simpler and smoother.

3 Kinds of IIRC Certified Specialists Trained To Handle Drying in Water Damage Remediation

Water damage may arise from many sources. It is the product of weather conditions, home malfunctions and random acts of nature. Whether they are the result of a broken pipe, rain from a leaking roof or some other cause, large influxes of water may lead to destruction and irreparable harm. It is important to contact professionals like a remediation and restoration company in Acworth, GA, to prevent or lessen commercial property damage and carry out water clean up in flooding cases. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, or IICRC, trains several kinds of experts to handle different aspects of such situations, including drying.

1. Commercial Drying Specialists
Water clean up projects needing the services of commercial drying specialists often involve hazards like heavy equipment, high voltage in confined spaces, electric machinery and dangerous chemicals. While the course they go through to obtain certification does not cover all potential risks, they are encouraged to research them on their own. They must also be familiar with and comply with relevant regulations. They are trained in:

  • Damage inspection and determination
  • Utilization of technical drying methods for water-impacted structures, furniture, systems and more
  • Workflow management
  • Process administration

2. Water Damage Restoration Technicians
Usually working in concert with a water damage restoration team, these technicians perform mitigation tasks. They evaluate severity, remove water and try to salvage items like inventory. They also possess an understanding of the different categories of water damage, the extent of harm each can do and how to deal with each.

3. Applied Structural Drying Technicians
Similar to commercial drying specialists, these individuals are trained to make quick, informed decisions. Like them, and like water damage restoration technicians, they work to get rid of moisture.
While all of these have overlapping roles, certified professionals must undergo specially designed coursework for each title. Companies may employ one or more of any of these kinds of experts for water clean up and remediation. The IICRC also offers many other certifications in the cleaning and restoration industry.

3 Ways To Keep Your Employees Safe During Mold Removal

Drywall in Acworth, GA covered with mold Mold tends to grow quickly.

Mold Removal Process

When you discover a mold problem in your Acworth, GA business, you may be alarmed about its possible dangers and how to protect your employees while you make arrangements for mold removal. Fortunately, there are several actions you can take before, during and after the mitigation and removal process that may help to keep your workers safe.

1. Alert and Evacuate Your Employees
Once you discover mold growth in your business, you can reduce the risk of danger to your workers by letting them know about the situation and ensuring that everyone in the area leaves until the mold is removed. Consider moving your workers to a safer space within the building so they can continue their jobs there or, if possible, allow them to work from home until it is safe to return.

2. Seal Off the Area
Before help arrives, you can reduce the risk of spreading mold spores by sealing off the affected area. This may be especially effective with black mold, which tends to grow quickly once it finds moisture and humidity. Close the doors but keep any windows inside the room open, and turn off your ventilation system so that spores cannot travel through the ducts. If you discover a moisture problem in the area, use ceiling fans to keep air circulating while you wait for assistance.

3. Ask About Aftercare Options
Once a mold removal and restoration service arrives, the technicians will likely use commercial-grade equipment to manage the issue and use equipment that may reduce the number of spores in the building. Consider asking the technicians about how you can prevent mold from returning and lower that risk, such as learning about how to handle moisture problems and how to perform mold checks.
Protecting your business and your employees from mold can be a challenge, but you do not have to face the problem alone. A mold removal service can guide you through all the stages of cleanup and help you understand how to lower the risk of future fungi invasions.

3 FAQs About Flood Cuts

1/15/2021 (Permalink)

Drywall removal from a water damage in Acworth, GA Performing flood cuts in an Acworth, GA home

Here Is Some Information About One Common Practice, The Flood Cut

You can expect to need work done to your home in Acworth, GA after you experience flooding. However, you have probably not heard of the techniques used during the restoration process.

1. What Are Flood Cuts?
A flood cut involves cutting and removing pieces of your drywall. This is done after standing water has been in your home. The cut is made roughly 12 inches above where the water stopped. Then, it is time to tear out your drywall and insulation. This allows for easy access to your studs, so any moisture issues in your home's structure can be remedied.

2. Why Are They Necessary?
While you may not always need a flood cut, these tend to be common after severe flooding. This is because they stop any bacteria or mold spores in the water from finding shelter in your home. It is also a good idea because it will allow your studs to dry out, so there are no structural problems with your home. Additionally, it allows for easy removal of your insulation, which no longer functions properly after it has gotten wet.

3. When Are They Necessary?
They are typically needed after a natural disaster causes standing water to enter your home. If water comes from a clean source inside of your home, your drywall could be salvageable. However, if water comes in during a storm, you will need a flood cut. Additionally, water that is known to contain bacteria will require a flood cut. For instance, if the water comes out of your toilet after sewer problems, you will need a flood cut to remove contamination.
If you experience flooding, a remediation company like SERVPRO of Northwest Cobb County will help you get the restoration process underway. To prepare yourself for this process, you will want to learn more about the terms they use, such as flood cut and what that entails.

Close-up Of A Man's Hand Holding Blue Napkin Under Leakage Pipe in Kennesaw, GA A kitchen sink leak that leads to flooding can cause more damage to your home

Unattended Leaks Can Lead To Larger Cases Of Flooding

Have you ever reached under your sink for a new sponge only to discover that there's a puddle of water below the sink pipes? Or maybe you've walked into the kitchen in the morning to make coffee and stepped in a larger puddle of water. No matter the size of the leak, there are steps that you should take to minimize the water damage from your leaking kitchen sink.

1. Turn Off the Water
The first thing that you need to do is turn off the water at the source. Water can't continue to leak if it doesn't have a source. While it may be inconvenient to be without water in the kitchen, you can't conduct cleanup effectively if more water is still leaking.

2. Call Your Insurance Company
Once you've contained the flooding, call your insurance company to report that you have water in the home and file a claim. Even if the leak appears to be minor, it's difficult to be sure that the only problem is a visible one. Your insurance company may want you to take pictures of the damage, so be sure to do that before you start cleaning up. They will be able to recommend a repair company in Kennesaw, GA whose services they will cover.

3. Call a Repair Specialist
You want your kitchen repair to be completed as quickly as possible. Hire a water damage restoration company that has a good reputation for being able clean up the visible mess quickly and efficiently, but who will also evaluate the less visible areas to ensure that you don't end up dealing with the long-term effects of mold or structural damage.
A kitchen sink leak that leads to flooding can cause more damage to your home than is immediately visible. Work with SERVPRO of Northwest Cobb County who will help restore your home and make it look “Like it never even happened.”

The Factors That Go Into a Fire Damage Estimate

12/28/2020 (Permalink)

Contents and shelves damaged by fire in an Acworth, GA facility Dealing with the aftermath of a fire can be stressful

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire can be stressful. Fortunately, having an estimate of what the fire damage restoration will cost can make your life a little less stressful. The restoration project you choose is complex and will require a qualified company. In Acworth, GA, the cost to repair a business is often in the thousands of dollars. This is after the insurance company pays its portion. Several factors can impact how much you are going to pay.

Type of Fire

Your commercial fire will fall into one of two categories:

  • Simple
  • Complex

Your restoration costs will depend heavily on what type of fire it is.

Procedure
When a fire breaks out, the first thing that should happen is to evacuate the building and call the fire department. Responding to the situation quickly will minimize the amount of fire and smoke damage to your building. Once it is safe to enter the building, your insurance representative will enter. They will photograph and document the scene so you can be compensated appropriately.
After the insurance process has been handled, it is time to start the restoration of your building. Having this done by professionals will cost more, but the finished result will be worth it. A representative of the company you choose will come to your business, examine the damage, and give you an estimate. How quickly you reacted to the situation, had the inspection done, and contacted the restoration company will be reflected in the amount of damage you have to pay for.

Damage
It will cost more to restore buildings that have damage throughout large areas. Additionally, if water was used to extinguish the fire, the soaked area will need to be included as damaged, raising the price of your cost.
The type of fire, follow up procedure, and damage to the building will impact your estimate. However, you should still expect to spend quite a bit of money on restoring your business.

Is Category 2 Water Damage Serious?

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

Dirty water standing inside an Acworth, GA office Category 2 water damage inside an Acworth, GA office

Water damage is common in commercial buildings. In fact, it’s one of the most routine calls to plumbers in Acworth, GA. If there is a water pipe repair needed, you should shut off the water immediately and remove the standing water as soon as possible. However, if the water is contaminated, you should wait for a professional.

What Is Contaminated Water?

When you have a broken pipe, the type of damage will depend on the type of pipe. If it’s not from the water supply line, it should be considered a potential health hazard.
The safety of the water depends on its category. There are three basic categories of water damage:

  • Category 1 – clean water
  • Category 2 – unsafe water
  • Category 3 – dangerous water

Is Category 1 Safe?
Category one is water directly from a water supply line. It should have no pathogens or unsafe chemicals in it. The only caveat to this is if the water supply to your business has been contaminated, such as when it's flooded in a major disaster.
Of course, category one still causes plenty of damage! You’ll need a water pipe repair before you can use that portion of your plumbing and must deal with the results of water damaging your building and its contents. That typically requires a professional water damage restoration company for the best results.

Why Is Category 2 a Hazard?
Category two water damage refers to sewer water not from a toilet. It won’t contain significant fecal matter but may contain urine. It also will have any pathogens or chemicals put into sinks and drains.

So, Category 3 Is the Worst?
Usually, yes. This is water damage from a flood or directly from the toilet, and it may contain human feces and sewage. It causes sickness and leaves a foul odor wherever it goes.
Fortunately, restoration companies have lots of experience with water pipe repair and have special disinfectants and sanitizers they use to clean up even the worst damage. In many cases, insurance will pay for the damage, but either way, it’s best to use a professional restorer to avoid allowing black mold to develop in hidden areas.

4 Ways To Avoid Mold Spore Buildup in Your Facility

A HEPA filtered vacuum is your best bet for cleaner air. When cleaning any carpet or other surface, make sure to use a HEPA vacuum

Mold Prevention Is Easier Than Restoration

Many property owners and managers don't think about mold until after serious problems have already arisen. If you own or manage a commercial space in Acworth, GA, preventing mold ahead of an incident can save considerable time and expense. Regular carpet cleaning and other standard procedures are relatively easy to implement and are effective at preventing spores from being inadvertently transported indoors.

1. Clean Up Often
While it may sound obvious, regular maintenance of a facility is among the best ways to prevent a mold infestation. In order to grow, mold depends on both reproductive spores and standing moisture. Sweeping, vacuuming, and removing moisture are the first lines of defense in preventing a serious mold problem.

2. Clean Carpets
Because carpets are porous and can easily trap moisture, they are often breeding grounds for mold colonies. Regular carpet cleaning ensures that your flooring is both dry and free of loose spores that may have been dragged in by unknowing employees. Treat carpets as you would any flooring material by maintaining them regularly.

3. Purchase Doormats
Installing doormats at the main entrances to a facility is one of the simplest ways to prevent mold spores from being spread to a greater area. Put up signs indicating employees should wipe their feet, and always wash mats after serious rainstorms or other inclement weather events. Mold can develop on surfaces in as little as one to two days, so mats should be allowed to dry completely after use.

4. Use HEPA Vacuums
Professional restoration companies use HEPA filters when dealing with mold problems because they are capable of trapping the tiny spores that all types of molds use to spread. When cleaning any carpet or other surface, make sure to use a HEPA vacuum.
Mold prevention is easier than restoration. Through regular carpet cleaning, maintenance, and standard procedures, you can prevent an infestation in your commercial facility.

How To Remove Shower Mold

11/24/2020 (Permalink)

hand brushing a tile in Kennesaw, GA Use a homemade cleaner

Here Are Three Steps You Can Take To Get Rid Of It

The damp bathroom in your home in Kennesaw, GA, provides the perfect breeding ground for mold. The consistent moisture in the air and in your shower is an ideal place for mold spores to settle and start creating colonies. If you start noticing shower mold, here are three steps you can take to get rid of it.

1. Use a Homemade Cleaner
Most mold in showers can be removed with simple cleaners you can make yourself with household supplies like these:

White vinegar – Straight vinegar or one part vinegar to two parts water
Borax – One cup of borax to one gallon of water
Bleach – One part bleach to 10 parts water

With each of these methods, spray enough onto the affected areas so that they're wet but not dripping. Wipe or scrub the shower mold off and then dry the areas. Make sure you immediately wash any cleaning supplies with mold on them so that you don't spread the spores throughout your house.

2. Replace Caulking
If your caulked areas are moldy and you can't scrub it off, it might be worth replacing the caulking altogether. Use a screwdriver or other similar object to pry the caulk out and then replace it. Seal it well so that water can't seep underneath and it's easy to clean in the future.

3. Call the Experts
If you discover the mold has spread beyond your shower or if you suspect that it's black mold, it's in your best interest to call a mold remediation company. These experts can safely remove such growth and prevent the spores from spreading throughout the rest of your home.
While shower mold is common, it's important to clean it up before it gets out of control. Use one of these methods to easily remove it yourself, but don't be afraid to call in the professionals if it gets to be too much.

Will My Insurance Policy Cover Water Damage?

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

Blue ballpoint pen, two antique brass keys and a home insurance claim from on a plywood clipboard. Water damage is one of the most common reasons for home insurance claims

Water damage is one of the most common reasons for home insurance claims. Damage can be sudden, such as from bursting pipes. It can also be gradual, like when water seeps through cracks in the foundation. Not all types of damage are covered by insurance, so homeowners in Acworth, GA, should be aware of what their policy covers.

How Can Water Cause Damage?

Types of water damage that can happen in your home include:

Your coverage depends on what kind of policy you have, the source of the damage and if it is gradual or sudden and accidental.

What Is Gradual Water Damage?
Gradual damage starts slowly and takes place over time. It may happen when deteriorated flashing or loose shingles allow water to enter through the roof, or when plumbing leaks slowly and causes damage to ceilings, walls or floors. Lack of repairs, such as failing to fix a broken pipe, and poor repair jobs can also cause gradual damage.
Because insurance is designed to cover sudden and accidental damage, your policy may not cover damage caused slowly over time.

What Is Resulting Damage?
Resulting damage differs from gradual damage and may be covered by insurance. For example, poorly installed plumbing may leak and cause gradual damage. If the leak results in bursting pipes, the resulting damage to the home may be covered.

How Do I Make a Claim?
If your home has sustained damage from a water source, the first step is to secure your belongings and prevent further damage. Shut off the water and make temporary repairs. When it's safe to do so, take photos. If you think you have a claim, call your insurance company. A claims adjuster can assess the situation and determine coverage for repairs and professional damage restoration expenses.
It's best to know your insurance coverage before a disaster happens. If you find yourself faced with bursting pipes or a roof leak, you won't be left wondering if the damage is covered.

3 Ways Business Income Coverage Can Help After a Fire

3 Ways Business Income Coverage Can Help After a Fire

Commercial property insurance covers physical damage to your business if there’s a fire, but until repairs are complete, your doors are likely to remain closed — and that kind of downtime can shutter a business for good. Business interruption insurance is designed to help keep that from happening. There are several ways that this type of insurance, also called “business income coverage,” can help keep you afloat.

1. Lost Income Replacement
When your business is closed for fire restoration, it’s not turning a profit, or even bringing in any income at all. Business income coverage is designed to help you replace this lost income. Lost income coverage is based upon your business’s average sales or profits when the business is open and operational. In addition to serving as a temporary replacement for your regular business income, this type of insurance also covers potential income that may be lost due to fire-damaged inventory or merchandise.

2. Operating Expense Coverage
Interruption insurance also covers many of your business's operating expenses while you're closed for repairs. Examples of covered expenses include mortgage or rent payments, taxes, payroll, and loan payments. However, some operating expenses, such as utilities, are typically excluded from most business interruption policies, so check your policy carefully.

3. Extra Expense Coverage and Other Options
Most insurance companies offer various add-on options to ensure that your business income coverage is tailored to your needs. Some options are designed to cover extra expenses, for example, if you have to open a temporary location during extensive repairs. There are also options to add additional covered events, for example, if an evacuation order were issued for Acworth, GA.
Commercial property insurance can be a major source of assistance after a disaster like a fire. However, if fire damage closes your business for a period of time, business interruption insurance can make the difference between closing for repairs and closing for good.

3 Simple Tips for Handling Sewage Damage

Tips When Dealing With Sewage Damage

Accidents and disasters involving sewage are unsanitary and difficult to handle. A sewer backup or flooded toilet can result in considerable water damage and sewage damage, and the waste often carries toxins, chemicals, disease-causing microbes and other harmful substances. There is therefore a double risk of contracting an illness and having property ruined. Sewer cleanup needs to be performed swiftly to minimize damage. Here are three tips for dealing with the negative consequences of a sewage catastrophe in Acworth, GA.

1. Hire Professionals
Sewer cleanup should be dealt with by a professional cleanup company due to the possible health risks associated with handling sewage. You should contact one as soon as possible to perform disinfection. This includes:

  • Draining out the contaminated water using natural means or a pump if natural means are not possible
  • Washing any surface that has come into contact with the contaminated fluid hot water and detergent
  • Sanitizing the washed surfaces with disinfectants like bleach

You should also make sure to contact your insurance company to make sure the cost of professional services is covered by your policy.

2. Deal With Utilities
Before the professionals arrive, you should make sure to take precautions regarding the utilities. Utility companies should be contacted, and gas and electricity should be turned completely off in affected areas. This is to lower the possibility of people being harmed by an explosion or electric shock.

3. Remove Contaminated Contents
Any contaminated items that can be safely removed should be removed to increase the chances that they can be salvaged. Some of the contents of your property might have to be discarded, but others can be saved if washed, disinfected and set out to dry. Some products might require restoration services.
Whether sewage waste comes from a sewer blockage due to tree roots or from your basement, it needs to be dealt with quickly. It can cause diseases like Hepatitis A or encourage mold growth if not properly cleaned. So it is important to be careful with sewer cleanup and consult trained professionals.

How to Protect Your Facility From Frozen Pipes

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO tech removing water from the floor of a business in Acworth, GA. If a burst pipe affects your facility in Acworth, GA, you can call a commercial restoration service

When you think of flooding, you might think of warm-weather events like heavy rain. Water damage, though, can also happen in winter weather due to a burst pipe.

What Causes a Pipe to Burst?

When water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on the container it is in. Frozen water can cause pipes of any material to burst. Pipes that are most susceptible to freezing are:

  • Outdoor sprinkler lines or swimming pool supply lines
  • Water supply lines in unheated areas of a building
  • Pipes against exterior walls with little or no insulation

How Can I Protect Pipes From Freezing?

Before cold weather hits, drain outdoor systems such as water sprinkler lines and hoses to eliminate standing water. Close inside valves that supply outdoor hose bibs. Leave the outside valve open to allow remaining water to drain or expand without bursting a pipe. Insulate attics, crawl spaces and garages where pipes are located. Consider using pipe sleeves, heat tape, heat cable or other insulating material on pipes that are exposed to cold weather.

During periods of very cold temperatures, keep the water dripping from the faucet connected to the exposed pipe. Running water is less likely to cause a frozen pipe, even if the amount of moving water is very small.

Consider keeping the thermostat at the same setting both day and night. While utility bills may be higher from the extra hours of heat, you can potentially avoid the damage of a burst pipe and standing water.

How Can I Thaw a Frozen Pipe?

If a faucet provides only a trickle of water, treat it as a frozen pipe. Keep the faucet open to allow running water to help melt ice inside the pipe. Heat the pipe with an electric heating pad, space heater, shop light or towels soaked in hot water. Do not leave electric heat sources unattended. Do not use an open flame device such as a blowtorch or kerosene heater.

If a burst pipe affects your facility in Acworth, GA, you can call a commercial restoration service to help with cleanup so you can get your business running again.

Be Proactive In Fixing Your Roof Damage

Severe weather events, such as strong wind and hail, can leave your home in need of roof repair. Signs of damage include:

  • Missing flashing
  • Peeling sealant
  • Water-damaged items in your attic
  • Water stains on your ceilings and walls

Look for Damage in Your Home

Go up to your attic and locate any issues. You may not easily find some of the leaks or holes, so use a flashlight in dark areas and thoroughly check the space. If your leaky roof caused severe water damage, talk to a storm damage restoration company to get your home back to pre-storm conditions.

If your attic functions as a storage space, you may have damp boxes or household items. Take anything wet or broken out of the room to see what you can save. Keep items you can dry and repair and throw away things you can’t salvage. Keep in mind that mold can begin to grow on a wet surface within 24 to 48 hours.

Schedule a Roof Inspection

A roofing company can inspect your home, give you a roof repair estimate, and complete any repair work. Find a reputable company with experience dealing with hail and wind damage in the Acworth, GA area. Check that the contractors are insured and licensed and can provide a warranty for the work.

Call Your Insurance Agent

Contact your insurance company to see if you need to file a claim and determine what your policy covers. Take photographs of any furniture or other items you have to get rid of. Keep all receipts for work and materials for reimbursement, even for temporary repairs you make.

Quickly dealing with a roof repair and mitigating storm damage can make recovering from a storm easier and less time-consuming.

When systems fall apart, a mess requiring the aid of a water damage restoration specialist may arise. Being familiar with the reasons a water heater failure may occur will help in heading off a worst-case scenario.
One primary cause of heater strain is sediment filling the bottom of your tank. Perform a periodic water heater flush to keep this from happening.
High water pressure is another major trigger. If you exceed 80 psi, you may begin to notice water overflowing from the side pipe. Replace your relief valve when this happens.
Your heater may be too small, in which case it’s only a matter of time before overwork causes it to malfunction. Consult an appliance expert beforehand to assure your home is outfitted with one the appropriate size.
Heaters use metal rods to prevent corrosion. Over time, however, they must be replaced. When they are not, rust accumulates and wreaks havoc. Therefore, have them checked once a year.
Heaters typically last between eight and 12 years. File your purchase slip in an accessible spot so you can handily refer to the installation date once concerns surface. A good indicator that a replacement has become necessary is when the pilot light refuses to stay lit.
When your water heater begins showing symptoms of a meltdown, know the cause of the trouble. Then, contact a service professional or purchase a newer model before you suffer flooding.

Content Cleaning After a Home Fire

After a home fire in Kennesaw, GA, items inside your home will likely have sustained damage from smoke and soot. That doesn’t mean all your valued belongings must be thrown out, however. An emergency restoration service can help. Content cleaning is the process of returning your items to their pre-fire condition through dry-cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning as well as other professional techniques.

Ultrasonic Cleaning
Surfaces that are nonporous, such as plastic, metal, and rubber, may need ultrasonic cleaning to remove soot and particles that have adhered to the surface. The process uses a special solution and high-pressure waves. This method of cleaning is especially useful for items with areas that are hard to reach.

Fabric Restoration
Smoke and ash can wreak havoc on all kinds of fabrics in a home:

  • Clothing
  • Bedding
  • Drapery
  • Furniture upholstery

While it may seem easy to throw bedspreads and curtains in the wash to remove smoke odor, not all fabrics can be laundered in a washing machine. A professional dry-cleaning service uses solvents instead of soap and water to clean fabrics. Some dry cleaners specialize in fire restoration and smoke removal.

Item Storage
If your home has sustained extensive fire damage, your belongings may need to be removed and stored while your house is cleaned and remodeled. An emergency restoration service can assist you by taking inventory of your items, cleaning and storing them in an offsite location, and coordinating the move-in process with you when remodeling is complete. Content storage offers you peace of mind knowing your possessions are safe and out of harm’s way as work takes place in your home.
After a house fire, knowing how to clean and store your valued possessions can be a daunting task. A fire restoration service in Kennesaw, GA, can help you with all aspects of damage cleanup such as dry-cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, inventory, and storage.

Causes of a Leaking Roof and Potential Mold Damage

Potential Causes Of Roof Leaks

Commercial facilities often have flat roofs, which are often more prone to damage and wear. Unfortunately, if these issues are not mitigated and repaired immediately, your facility may experience a ceiling leak. While a small roof leak may not seem too bad, within 24 to 48 hours, black mold spores can root and begin to develop and colonize, according to most mold remediation companies in Red Rock, GA. There are several potential causes of roof leaks, which should automatically lead to inspections.

Storm damage
Winter damage
Age
Seal failure

Storm Damage
Severe weather can often result in minor to significant roof damage. High winds can cause flying debris, like tree branches, which can puncture the rubber membrane of a flat roof. Heavy rainfall can lead to gutter systems being overwhelmed, flooding parts of the roof, which can lead to worn seals and entry through vents or skylights. You should always perform a quick inspection after any significant storm.

Winter Damage
Frigid temperatures can often have devastating effects on roofing systems, especially with heavy snowfalls and ice. Any commercial facility should consider having a roof inspection after a, particularly difficult winter to ensure that all roofing systems are intact.

Age
It is common knowledge that a roof is only good for so long, whether that is 15 or 20 years. As flat roofs age, cracks can appear as can glue failure, materials disintegrate, and result in inadequate protection of the substructure. When approaching the end of a guarantee with a roof, make sure to have frequent inspections, and perform necessary repairs.

Seal Failure
Seals around vents, skylights, and HVAC systems do not have the same life expectancy as your roof. It is crucial to assess the strength and protective quality of your seals to reduce the risks of water damage and black mold growth in the future.
Mold growth can occur in as little as two days. Make sure that your roof is healthy and stable with annual inspections to reduce your risks of water damage and black mold development.

What To Do With Soaked Electronics

What To Do When You Have Soaked Electronics?

Flooding can cause a lot of damage to your personal home and property. When it comes to water damage, none is quite as heartbreaking as finding flooded electronics and fried circuit boards. Dealing with this damage can be dangerous, so make sure you know what you're doing before you try to salvage the electronics from your home flood in Mars Hill, GA.

1. Assess The Situation: The last thing you want to do is get yourself electrocuted. Remove any wet garments and completely dry your hands before touching active electronics. If you can do so safely, you should also disconnect your home's electricity.

2. Watch Out for Smoke and/or Steam: Even if the device is battery powered, you can still find yourself on the receiving end of a nasty shock. If you go to retrieve your submerged device and find that it's emitting smoke or steam, do not touch it.

3. Turn Your Device Off Immediately: The heat from the device can accelerate water damage in your electronic devices. Once you do retrieve your flooded electronics from the water, you should immediately shut them off to avoid causing more damage.

4. Remove And Dry The Water: If you can, dump any leftover water out of the device. This can be done by gently shaking or turning the device. If you can, disassemble the electronic and lay the individual parts out to dry. Remove the battery first.

5. Do Not Rely On Rice: Using rice to draw water out of submerged electronics is merely a myth. It may draw the water out, but it cannot remove the contaminants that actually cause the electronic damage.
Floods can wreck absolute havoc on your personal home and property. Dealing with flooded electronics on top of water damage just feels like adding insult to injury as well. If your home has fallen victim to a flood, you should consider contacting flood remediation experts to assist with the damage.

Everything You Need To Know About Reducing Flood Damage

Actions To Take After A Flood

There are several ways to prevent or reduce damage when a hurricane threatens your Acworth, GA, business. A sandbag is the most well-known resource that can stop floodwater from entering your establishment. However, there are also other resources at your disposal. Additionally, even if you block as much water as possible, there may still be leftover damage. Learn more about the main method, some alternatives, and actions to take after the flood.

Primary Damage Reduction
During a severe storm or hurricane, water can come through any entrance or opening of a building, no matter the size or location. The best way to counteract this is by inspecting every door and window around the building to see if they are likely to flood. Place bags filled with sand or dirt around the entrance, creating a barrier. The impenetrable material of the bags diverts most of the water away from the vulnerable location.

Damage Reduction Alternatives
Though these bags are a simple and effective procedure, they do have drawbacks. It might take you too long to fill a single sandbag, let alone many. There are several alternatives that provide the same effects:

  • Water-filled flood dams
  • Water-filled large tubes
  • Water-absorbent fabric dams
  • Steel fences and barriers
  • Levee-building machines

These innovations have advantages over the basic bags. For example, the machines help you create larger sand levees, while you can fill water dams and tubes faster. Meanwhile, you can more easily deploy fabric dams and let them absorb water throughout the year, while fences protect larger areas. Decide on which solution best fits your situation.

Flood Aftermath
Once the storm passes, act fast before the damage escalates. Document flood damage and contact emergency storm remediation technicians to assist you. Consider floodwater to be contaminated and safely remove and dispose of bags, dams, and other reduction resources.
Though it is impossible to stop a hurricane from hitting Acworth, GA, you can prevent damage with items like a sandbag or a barrier. Create a plan and secure these resources long before disaster strikes.

Fire Damages and Your Computer

7/9/2020 (Permalink)

Flames of fire coming out of the keyboard of a computer Fire damages can affect your electronics

Fire damages don't just affect the structure of your Lost Mountain, GA, commercial property; they also affect the furnishings, appliances, and business contents of the buildings. Protecting these belongings from damages is just as important as keeping the building safe. One area that requires special care is dealing with electrical fire damages and responding so that electronic appliances can be saved.

Cleaning Methods

Fire cleanup and repair professionals have a lot of methods available when cleaning and repairing your commercial property. These include

Wet and dry cleaning
Spray and wipe care
Foam cleaning for upholstery
Abrasive cleaning
Immersion baths

When it comes to electronics and computer cleanup, however, most of these methods aren't appropriate.

Computer Damages
Desktop computers (which are found in many commercial properties) are often equipped with little fans that keep the internal components cool enough for optimal operating temperatures. When a fire breaks out in your building (or an electrical fire breaks out inside the computer case,) those fans circulate and re-circulate the smoke and soot in the air. As a result, the interior components of the computer become coated in grime and acidic soot. In addition to the black film, damages may include a magnetic charge that could short out circuits. These components include the circuit board, connections, wiring, and other hardware.

Professional Cleanup
It's important that computer cleanup is handled by professionals with experience in smoke damage and computers. While waiting for the pros to arrive, shut down and unplug the computer. Resist the urge to wipe anything down. Disconnect peripherals, including the monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, and any speakers. You should also remove any memory or storage, such as the hard drive. Sometimes business owners are tempted to attempt computer cleaning on their own. Remember that professionals have specialized equipment to prevent damage from static electricity and other lesser-known concerns.
Don't take electrical fire damages lightly. Recognize how to protect your computer from further damages and turn the rest of the cleanup and repair work to professionals.

Tips for Preventing Water Damage in a Home

It's always better to avoid a problem in the first place than it is to clean up a mess afterward. This universal truth applies to the leaking of water in home situations, where water damage could result in problems small, medium, and large. Fortunately, a number of things can be done to avoid most instances of water running rampant in a home, including the following:

  • Stay alert for water leaks
  • Pay attention to plumbing fixtures
  • Hire licensed and insured plumbing contractors
  • Allow contractors to install new appliances
  • Maintain devices such as water heaters

Old houses require even more diligence, but even newer homes have issues. The plumbing network in any home has dozens if not hundreds of connections that could spring a leak at any time.

More Things To Consider
Sometimes water in home plumbing problems are obvious, such as a broken pipe, while other times they can be subtle. For example, a small leak behind a wall could go unnoticed for days or weeks. Signs of leaking water might be as minor as a discolored marking on the wall or a faint odor. It also pays to occasionally inspect the basement or attic for signs of water damage such as dampness or the patches of mold growing on wood, insulation or tiling. Areas such as the base of a toilet, the exterior of a shower, the bottom of a dishwasher or washing machine should be routinely inspected for signs of leaks.

Additional Steps To Take
To prevent water in home from causing extensive damage, the services of a qualified water mitigation franchise in Mars Hill, GA, can provide many benefits. A professional team of technicians can arrive on the scene only hours after a call and begin a pipe cleanup or other actions. They can quickly assess the situation and get to work removing water, stopping the source of the water leak, and drying out the impacted areas. The goal is to restore a home to is original condition as efficiently as possible.

Residential Fire Cleanup, Restoration, Mitigation, and Prevention

6/15/2020 (Permalink)

Fire loss in a kitchen Fire damage in an Acworth kitchen

Whether your home has been affected by wildfire or a cooking fire, mitigation is often one of the steps taken by fire restoration specialists. With the right steps, you and damage cleaning professionals may reduce the risk of and level of fire damage in the future. There are four steps you and/or the professionals should take:

  1. Cleanup
  2. Restoration
  3. Mitigation
  4. Prevention

What Does Cleanup Involve?

When fire and smoke damage cleanup professionals clean your damaged home, they haul out debris and items that can't be repaired. They scrub down walls and other surfaces and provide disinfection as necessary.

What Is Restoration?
After the home has been cleaned, professionals handle the replacement and repairs necessary to return your home to its pre-fire condition. Contact your insurance company to determine which fire restoration steps are covered.

What Is Mitigation?
Mitigation includes those efforts that seek to minimize damages while preventative steps seek to stop something from happening. As a homeowner, you can't prevent all wildfires, but you can take steps to mitigate the damages to your Acworth, GA, home:

Clear dry brush and trees from around the perimeter of your home.
Create a fire-free area with rocks, stones, and other non-flammable materials in the five feet around your home. Consider xeriscaping for further fire resistance.
Don't park on dry vegetation and make sure off-road vehicles have working spark arresters.
Upgrade your home building materials (such as roofing tiles) with fire-resistant products.

What Preventative Steps Can I Take?

Don't use the stove, candles, cigarettes, or other potential fire sources when you're sleepy or have consumed alcohol.
Store flammable items away from heat sources, such as kitchen towels or wooden utensils in the kitchen and flammable chemicals in the garage and workshop.
Don't leave a flame unattended. If you're cooking, remain in the kitchen. If you have a lit candle, don't leave the room.
Keep up with home maintenance. Dryers, heating systems, and furnaces are all potential sources of home fires without appropriate inspections and upkeep.

As you and fire restoration professionals work through cleanup, restoration, mitigation, and prevention steps, your home should be safer from outside and inside fires in the future. Don't wait for a home fire, though; take mitigation and prevention steps today.

Services a Restoration Team Provides

After a basement flood at your Kennesaw, GA, place of business you may want to contact a local water damage restoration service. Not only may professional help be included in your company insurance coverage, but a restoration team can provide a number of services designed to more quickly remedy the flooding problem and get your business up and running again. These include

1. Removing the Water

One of the first steps when dealing with a flooded area is to remove the water as quickly as possible. Allowing water to soak in can lead to secondary damages such as warped wood and mold. A professional may have access to a pump or water-rated vacuum which may help speed the water removal process along. A squeegee can also be used to pull water away from the edge of the walls so that it can more easily be removed.

2. Drying the Area

The next step after a basement flood is to thoroughly dry the area. This too can help prevent long term problems. It’s a good idea to get as much ventilation going as possible to help improve the airflow of the area. In some cases, the restoration service may bring in a dehumidifier to help pull moisture from the air.

3. Locating the Source

It’s important to locate the source of any flooding in order to prevent future issues from happening. Your restoration service should know what the most likely locations are and be able to help locate the main problem. Taking care of this quickly can help protect your company from any future flooding issues.

After a basement flood at your business, it’s recommended to contact a restoration service for help. Professionals will have the tools needed to remove the water and dry the area. They can also help locate the source of the problem so that mitigation steps can be taken against future damages.

3 Ways Water Damage Can Cost Your Business Money

3 Ways Water Damage Can Cost Your Business Money

Water damage can affect your Davis Crossroads, GA, business in a variety of ways. While this term might bring to mind a large amount of flooding or an overflowing toilet, even smaller issues can have a large impact. Whether you are dealing with significant damage or just a leak, you could end up losing money in the following ways.

1. Higher Water Bills
A water leak, particularly if it is on the smaller side, might not seem like a big deal. You might even push it to the back of your mind to make room for more urgent matters. However, this is not the best solution to this problem. If the leak is ongoing, you could be losing a much larger amount of water than you think. This can result in higher water bills that can cost your business thousands of dollars. Have leaks repaired quickly to prevent this.
2. Building Repairs
Along with higher water costs, you could also be looking at a repair bill. If you ignore a water leak that ends up causing significant damage to your building, you may be unable to file an insurance claim to cover the costs. A leak can indicate damaged pipes that could break and cause flooding. It can also cause mold to grow and spread through the building.
3. Lost Work Hours
If there is a pipe break in the building, you might be unable to work while repairs are being done. Depending on the severity of the damage, the process can be lengthy. Over this time, you could lose money in the form of sales and profits. You might also lose valuable work time. You can reduce the likelihood of this by performing inspections and maintaining your building regularly.
Even if it is something as small as a water leak, it is a good idea to hire a water damage remediation company to perform repairs to your building when needed. Catching these problems before they become larger will keep your business from suffering more severe losses.

Mold Prevention Tips for Your Commercial Property

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

Mold Prevention Tips for Your Commercial Property

Water damage in your commercial building does not just harm electronics. It could also lead to a buildup of mold.
Mold is found naturally in the environment, where it breaks down organic materials. It is even used to make penicillin and brie. However, mold inside your property can cause major damage to your floors and walls. To prevent this destruction, consider the below suggestions.
1. Keep the Building Dry
Mold needs moisture in order to grow. Any mold prevention plan, therefore, starts with limiting wetness in the building. If you notice a spill on the carpet or a leak from a pipe, dry the affected areas immediately. Any items that cannot be immediately dried should be removed from the premises within 48 hours.
2. Ventilate
It is not just water damage that causes mold growth. Even activities such as doing laundry or cooking can increase the moisture in a building. If your property has a kitchen or a laundry facility, make sure it is properly ventilated. You may also want to consider installing exhaust fans or dehumidifiers in highly wet areas.
3. Improve Air Flow
Did you know that air holds less moisture as it gets colder? Poor airflow could cause this excess moisture to settle onto the floors or walls. You should thus keep interior doors open and keep furniture away from the walls.
4. Check the Gutters
Clogged roof gutters could cause a water leak that leads to a mold problem. Inspect the gutters regularly and make sure they stay clean. You should also check for any water stains in the ceiling, as they could be evidence of leaks.
By limiting water damage to your Red Rock, GA, property, you can reduce the spread of mold. Still, even if you take the proper precautions, mold damage can occur. This is especially true after major water emergencies such as floods. If you do suspect that there is excess mold in your building, contact your local restoration and cleanup specialists.

3 Tips for Mitigating Roof Damage

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

a man has a problem with leakage. it collects a drop of water leaked from the ceiling. You can reduce harm to the interior of your home by collecting the water

3 Tips for Mitigating Roof Damage

The roof is often the part of your home that is most susceptible to storm damage from wind, hail, or rain. Because contractors often receive a large amount of work after a big storm, there can be a long waiting period to repair roof damage. These three tips can help you mitigate your damage while you wait for repairs to be made.

1. Use a Tarp
A hole in your roof can allow rainwater to enter your home. A tarp can be a good temporary fix that is relatively cheap to purchase and easy to install. If your roof damage is covered by insurance, your insurance company may reimburse you for the cost of the tarp, so be sure to keep your receipt.
2. Remove Standing Water
If your home has a flat roof, water may collect on it, causing seepage. If you can safely access your roof, you maybe be able to remove the water by sweeping it off. However, if you have any safety concerns, it may be best to contact a storm cleanup specialist in Macland, GA, to assist you.
3. Collect Water From Leaks
If wind damage has caused your roof to leak, you can reduce harm to the interior of your home by collecting the water. Pots and pans may work well for small leaks. Large plastic buckets or garbage cans may be a better choice for more severe leaks. It may also be helpful to place plastic coverings over your belongings that can not be moved to a dry area to protect them from any drips that your containers miss.
If a storm has caused roof damage to your home, it may take some time for permanent repairs to be completed. While you are waiting, you can reduce the amount of additional damage that may occur to your home by implementing these three mitigation tips.

Does Your Business Need a Fire Sprinkler System?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

Factory roof structure and automatic fire protection in building system. Fire sprinkler system in a Lost Mountain, GA building

Many people are surprised to learn that hotels and similar public places are some of the safest places when it comes to fire. This is because these buildings are equipped with well-maintained fire sprinkler systems. Whether you can see the system or not, sprinklers are connected by a network of pipes filled with water and are ready to activate as needed.

How Sprinkler Systems Work

How do these fire suppression systems work? First, take a closer look at the components of each sprinkler head:

The flower-shaped sprinkler is the most visible and recognized part of the system.
A liquid-filled bulb is designed to burst when temperatures get high.
When that bulb breaks, a plug is released that, in turn, allows water through.
Behind the plug is the connection to the water supply. Water is kept under pressure, so when the plug is released, the spray of water hits the sprinkler and spreads to put out flames.

As soon as temperatures rise enough to break the bulb, several gallons of water empty into the area affected by heat. In many cases, this response is enough to quickly extinguish flames and minimize smoke or at least send spraying water to decrease temperatures and reduce smoke.

The Efficiency of the Fire Suppression Systems

Fire sprinkler systems are very effective at putting out fires. They respond quickly to rising temperatures. Within a single minute, several gallons of water are released onto flames, heat, and smoke. Sprinkler systems effectively and simultaneously reduce potential risks from these fire threats.

The Positive Truth About Sprinkler Systems

Some Lost Mountain, GA, business owners are hesitant to install these life-saving systems because of misconceptions. It is uncommon for sprinklers to activate accidentally or for small amounts of smoke to trigger a response. Fire sprinkler cleanup is less of a chore than cleaning up damage from a fire, even when fire damage cleanup and restoration professionals are on the job. When the fire system is triggered, only those sprinklers or a single sprinkler located near the fire will activate.

The Key Features of a Business Continuity Plan

4/12/2020 (Permalink)

Paper with words BCP Business Continuity Plan A business continuity plan can minimize the impact on your company

A large storm has the potential to disrupt your business in Kennesaw, GA, in a number of ways. Having a well-thought-out continuity plan in place is the gold standard for minimizing the impact on your company. This plan has many components and involves drafting a business impact analysis and recovery strategies. Swift remediation of storm damage through the services of a professional storm mitigation team is one key feature of the plan. This puts you in a position to recover faster and return to normal operations. A complete analysis of recovery strategies helps you identify your preparedness level and any gaps in your capabilities.

The Critical Importance of IT

Nearly all companies today rely on IT. A storm that causes flooding can reduce your computer network and severely limit your ability to service customers and keep employees productive. A continuity plan seeks to accomplish the following goals:

  • Assess the status of computer networks, servers, computers, and wireless devices
  • Identify critical components of the IT network
  • Fix items as swiftly as possible
  • Identify manual alternatives until the computer system is operational

All of these steps should be documented in the plan. Important contact resources should be recorded so employees know who to call for help. The option for telecommuting should be considered, as well as how to implement this step.

The Value of Testing and Exercises

It is not enough to have a continuity plan in place if it cannot be implemented when the time comes. Key personnel should be familiar with the plan through training exercises and testing. The more familiar your team is with the process, the more likely they will be to be able to implement its key features. After a round of exercises and orientation programs, input should be taken on how to improve the process for all parties. The more complete a plan is the more likely your company will be prepared for an unexpected event.

5 Tips for Containing Mold in a Home

You are likely to find black mold in your home in dark, damp spaces. This includes bathrooms and shower spaces, attics and basements, and washing areas. Moisture is usually the cause of mold growth, so anywhere that has seen a leak should be watched carefully. Once mold is discovered in your home in Acworth, GA, you should take action quickly to contain the spread and to speed up removal. These steps will help take care of the problem.

1. Slow the Spread. Mold spreads through microscopic spores which can invade your heating and cooling system. When possible, do not use these systems until the mold is contained.

2. Look for Moisture. Anywhere mold is present there is likely to be a moisture problem. Look for unknown roof leaks or for pipes that have bad connections or that drip onto floors and ceilings. Do what you can to eliminate the excess moisture, even if it includes calling in a plumbing contractor.

3. Start on Mold Cleanup. Work with a local mold mitigation team for a rapid response that follows professional cleanup standards. This will include mold containment procedures and trained technicians who understand how black mold spreads. Once the mold is contained, the company will work on mold removal, and then move on to cleaning and sanitizing your home.

4. Make Sure the Cleanup Is Thorough. Mold is persistent and pervasive. It is present naturally in the environment, so it is impossible to completely eliminate from the home. However, having a professional cleanup and remove excess moisture is likely to keep mold at bay. With a lackluster cleanup, though, the chance of having mold growth return is higher.

5. Stay Vigilant. Keep an eye on areas that have seen mold growth. Watch out for leaks and standing water in the home.
Having black mold in your home is an unpleasant situation and could cause damage to flooring, walls and ceilings. Following the above steps is a good way to handle the problem.

  • Essential equipment such as computers could be ruined.
  • You could lose valuable data and information.
  • The building could be unsafe and unusable for work functions.

Offsite Work

Storm damage could render your building in Mars Hill, GA, unfit for operation for days, weeks or even months, depending on the severity of the damage. Your plan should include ways for your employees to work remotely. Grant employees remote access to servers and other files. Set up communication tools so people can conduct meetings from home or other locations.

Staggering Work Times

If you can use part of your building, but other portions are not ready, consider shuffling schedules so people can share workspaces. Where possible, adjust work times so you can fit the entire staff in the available space while professional flood cleanup teams retore your office.

Have a Backup Plan

Every continuity plan should emphasize the importance of backing up all information. Employees should save documents and files online. If you have sensitive data on paper files, scan them to digital sources.
Don't wait until it's too late to make your business continuity plan. Review this list and make yours today. This can give you peace of mind if misfortune hits your building.

You may not spend much time thinking about your water heater. When there's a problem, however, you realize how much you depend on it. Wise homeowners know some important maintenance tips to prolong the life of this appliance. A simple flush of this unit can help it work more efficiently and avoid troubling issues such as leaks.

Why Do a Flush?

If you ignore your water heater, you're not alone. Many Red Rock, GA, residents don't know how to flush the unit or simply put it off. This task is critical, however, to the appliance's health. Here's why:

  • A flush will remove the sediment deposits from the bottom of the heater.
  • The sediment can cause the unit to rust, suffer or damage or fail entirely.

A flush will keep the unit running correctly longer.

Drain the Water

When you're ready to start the water heater flush, turn off the gas to the appliance and open the pressure relief valve. Next, attach a garden hose to the drain valve and open the drain. Make sure you have a large bucket at the other end of the hose. Or, you can direct into a drain in the ground. You should drain the tank until the water is clear. Some heaters may have excessive sediment, so you may have to drain it entirely.

Clean the Tank

Once you have drained the water, flush it with more water. You can do this by opening the cold water spigot leading to the hot water tank. Do this for a few minutes, and you should see clear water. Then, close the drainage valve and open the pressure valve. Remove the hose, and you should have a more efficient heater. After 20 to 30 minutes, the water should start to heat up, and you can resume cooking and bathing comfortably.
Before you have to call a flood cleanup company to rescue you from water damage, flush your water heater. This task can save you a lot of grief down the road.
